Add PhotosThe building of the church began in 1877 but may not have been completed until 1878 because of money. A Methodist minister, Mr. Meffert, performed a marriage ceremony in 1877-so he or Rev. Tanquary was the 1st Methodist minister. The Presbyterians had a preacher come from Richmond until they organized in 1895. In 1910 the community raised money by subscription to remodel the church. The main auditorium of the present building is the old church building covered with brick veneer and the building was dedicated September 27, 1913 debt free. The committee, consisting of representatives from the four denominations who raised the money were: J.W. Mayfield, Presbyterian; J.B. McGuire, Methodist; J.J. Rust, Baptist; J.S. Wright, Christian. The first Sunday school was held in 1883 and since thre was no money to buy coal it met during summer months only. It was reorganized in 1888. Attendance to the Christian church was dissolved in mid-1900's. Presbyterian members, most of whom are retired and live in Richmond, moved their membership-at-large to Richmond Presbyterian in 1970. The church at present [1973] has a Methodist minister, Lloyd McKemey, serving two Sundays each month and a Baptist minister, W.R. Dollinger, serving two Sundays a month. It remains a beautiful, well-cared for country church resting among rolling hills and farmland of the Morton community.
