Brethren Church Cemetery
Also known as Dunkard Church Cemetery
Morrill, Brown County, Kansas, USA
By 1881 there were about 200 members in the Pony Creek congregation.
In 1881 the Pony Creek Church was erected, 3 1/2 miles north of Morrill, near the cemetery they'd been using since the 1870's, and the cemetery that this page is for.
1882 -1883 was the beginning of the Progressive movement. Although they had fewer members they later took over the church building, 3 1/2 miles north of Morrill, buying the Conservative group out. The Progressive group later called themselves The Brethren Church.
(In 1884 Brethren members south of Morrill built a church two miles south, and one half mile east of Morrill. It was called the South Morrill church. This would be where the Sun Springs Cemetery is today. In 1905 they took the building down and moved it to Morrill.)
(In 1888 the Conservative group mentioned above built a new church one mile north and two miles east of the original Pony Creek church. They called this church the North Morrill church. Unfortunately a tornado came through the area and damaged this church in 1896. It may or may not have been rebuilt, but the Brethren Encyclopedia says that the North Morrill members joined the Morrill (town) group in 1912.)
The encyclopedia article seems to indicate that The Brethren Church continued to meet on the original Pony Creek church property until at least 1980. (was next to this cemetery)

There is also a publication called, "Some Cemeteries of Brown County, Kansas with Supplements" compiled by Don L. Ford, Higginson Books, Salem, Massachusetts, 1986. On pages 32 and 33 Ford's book lists burials for "Dunkard Church Cemetery". It describes the location: "This cemetery is located approximately 3 1/2 miles north of Morrill, Kansas back in a field." (same cemetery)
The Brown County Genealogical Society refer's to this cemetery as the "United Brethren Church Cemetery".
