The Old German Cemetery was the cemetery of the United German Evangelical Church of Penn Hills Township (Penn Hills later incorporated as a municipality). The church, which stood on the Shannon Rd. side of the property (north side) had burned and the congregation dissolved before the end of 1900A+D. A Lutheran remnant soon started The English Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer of Oakmont & Verona (Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakmont). Redeemer returned to its roots when it purchased the Penn Hills Shenandoah school nearby the cemetery at the end of Idaho Ave, serving children from preschool through 12th grade.
This cemetery contains burials predominantly of people that lived in Penn Township (now Penn Hills). Many were members of the local German Evangelical church congregation. This is a small cemetery and the headstones are near 100% photographed.
There is a problem with mistakenly placing memorial pages in this cemetery based solely on death records. Unfortunately, the record keepers in Pittsburgh had a habit of entering "German Lutheran Cemetery" on Pittsburgh Death Records from the 1870's through the early 1900's for people that are also buried in St.Peter's German Lutheran Cemetery on Lemington Avenue in Pittsburgh's East End. This practice continued when Pennsylvania Death Certificates started in 1906. If you check the death records, more often than not, you will see that the deceased person lived in Pittsburgh's East End and not in Penn Township (Penn Hills). Greentree also has a German Cemetery and this has caused record confusion in a few cases.
If you are uncertain, Find-A-Grave member DMG (#47752540) has volunteered to help you with any questions about burials in these cemeteries. If you message him, he is more than happy to help.
