Upon the death of his wife, Elizabeth, Lewis White established this cemetery on his homestead on July 14, 1853. He stipulated that the cemetery was to remain a free burial ground for the public.
In 1979, the city of Saint Anthony commissioned local artist and architect, Elizabeth Gleason Thompson, to create a sculpture that would mark the cemetery. Thompson titled her sculpture "Generation" and the inscription reads as follows:
GENERATION
The St. Anthony Township Cemetery, or "Potter's Field," was founded by Lewis Stone on July 14, 1853, to "be used exclusively for the uses of the public as a common and free burying ground forever and never to be used for any other purpose whatever."
Elizabeth White, wife of Lewis Stone, died at the age of 54 years and 6 months. She was buried in this acre of former homestead farm and her tombstone lies north of this sculpture.
"Generation" commemorates the hundreds of persons buried here in one of the oldest cemeteries in Hennepin County.
This sculpture, by Elizabeth Gleason Thompson, was commissioned by the City of St. Anthony and made with the help of Girl Scout Troop 1586, the Raymond Haik family and others from the community.
