The Church of St James is the parish church for the Church of Ireland parish of Durrus. It is part of the Kilmocomogue Union Of Parishes, in the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne, and Ross. The parish is in the South West of Ireland in County Cork, with the church located at the top of Dunmanus Bay looking westwards towards the Atlantic ocean. On the site of an earlier church (dating to at least 1615) it was completed in 1792. Unfortunately, the Church was badly built and part of it collapsed. It was rebuilt by a later Rector, the Reverend Henry Jones (1799 - 1805) at his own expense. The Church was enlarged in 1832 and in 1867 the South Aisle was added.
The 1842 Ordnance Survey map shows the church, but there is no front coast road and the area around the rectory is shown wooded and the immediate area is shown as "Cappanamanna". Around 1840 Lord Bandon presented the land at the east area of the graveyard for an extention. As it was rocky, it was covered by importing a large amount of clay. This was obtained from the buffs near the present pier to the west.
In 1935 the church entrance was widened, railings were erected and gates were added. This work was paid for by a former parishioner, Mr Hosford, resident in England.
The parishioners come from a wide variety of backgrounds. The majority of families have lived in the area for centuries. Some came as Huguenot refugees from France in the seventeenth century.
