Zebra Cemetery
Also known as Arnold Cemetery
Osage Beach, Camden County, Missouri, USA
Using the instructions "Bury your loved ones between the three post oaks", residents of Zebra between 1900 and 1940 hand-buried approximately 30 individules at this historica site, The Zebra Cemetery was originally located behind the Zebra Church-School, The indentation of the wall next to this sign parallels the back of the building.
There have been at least four such community buildings near this site before a brick school was built in 1936. Rivermen named the town Zebra when it was located on the Osage River because of the black and white stripes on the limestone bluff behind the buildings. The post office was established in 1886.
When the area was inundated in 1931, forming the Lake of the Ozarks, the post office was moved to the top of the bluff, and then to various locations along highway 54, The name was retained until 1935, when a group of local businessmen decided Osage Beach was more appealing and promotional. The post office designation of the town was officially changed at the time, but old timers still preferred to say they lived in "Zebra".
