Add PhotosThe First Presbyterian Church of Newtown Cemetery may have begun as early as 1708 however, it is known that the last burial took place in 1925.
There were originally 200 graves, some unknown and most very old. A few graves were privately moved. The records aren't clear as to whom and/or what the church found and moved. It was either "8 boxes of mixed unidentified remains or 21 identified persons" which were brought to the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY on June 13, 1958.
In 1962, the church erected a gray granite stone, 4 ft. x 6 ft. x 1 ft., which reads, "In memory of deceased members removed from church cemetery in Elmhurst."
In 2001, the location of the re-burial was identified as being at 51 Prospect Hill, The Evergreen Cemetery. The cemetery is beautiful, with huge old trees, and the church's large stone is in excellent condition.
The Evergreens office had little to offer by way of information; no names were listed on their records. However, during a 2001 visit, nine smaller stones were found in front of the church's stone, original ones from First Presbyterian Cemetery, dating back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. These had been set lying down and were badly overgrown by grass and sod. Some of it was cleared, enough to read some partial inscriptions. Several of the names are of old church families but it is not known if these stones match any of the remains that were moved here back in 1958.
