On September 9th, 1854, John and Martha L. Barnard deeded a ½-acre parcel of land fronting on the road from Clonmell to Upland for $75 to Nathan Wilmer, George Bishop, Lee Wilson, Edward Cole, and John Lewis, trustees of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States of America, for the erection of a meeting house for that congregation. Owing to its location on top of a hill on the road, the congregation was sometimes known as "Club Hill."
The largely rural congregation declined in the years leading up to the turn of the century, and by the early 1900s the congregation was being served by circuit preachers.
A small cemetery surrounds the church, with the earliest known burial occurring in 1865; the latest, in 1947. Still largely rural, the cemetery was cleaned up and marked with a sign as part of an Eagle Scout Project.
Today, there remain quite a few upright stone markers with no carvings in the cemetery, a handful of footstones with just initials, and a couple dozen headstones remaining, most very hard to read. The cemetery is adjacent to a gold-colored house.
