The land was donated in 1797, by John Walace Jr., the founder of the town, for a "Dutch Meeting House." In 1818 it was dedicated as "Christ Union Church." It continued to be used by both Presbyterians and Lutherans until 1866. Three years later, the Lutherans sold the Union Church to the Antietam confragation of German Baptists (now Church of the Brethren) and erected a brick edifice on the site at the corner of South Church and East Second streets.
Through the years, all the bodies had been removed from the Union graveyard and reinterred in family plots in both Green Hill Cemetery and Burns Hill Cemetery. The bodies remaining in the churchyard when the Lutherans disposed of the property were deposited in a large lot at Green Hill cemetery.
