The Plymouth Memorial Cemetery is the combination of two cemeteries, the Plymouth Catholic Cemetery to the west and the Plymouth Protestant aka City Cemetery to the east. The Catholic Church, St Mary of the Mountains, sits just beneath the entrance to the Catholic part. It was originally built in 1881 and continued until the services stopped in 2020. Several years ago, the Catholic Church turned over their cemetery to the City of Plymouth.
As you enter the Catholic part, you are greeted by the large mausoleum of the D'Agostini family, who owned the oldest winery in the Shenandoah Valley, D'Agostini, now known as Sobon. Originally the winery was known as Uhlinger and started in 1869.
In the Protestant side are graves from the earliest settlers. The oldest dated headstone is Joseph Estey who died in 1857 at the age of one year, two months and 20 days.
Plymouth was a mining and farm town and this is evident by the memorial on the mass grave of ten men who died in the Fremont Mine on November 30, 1907. It is located on the southeast corner of the cemetery.
The cemetery is mostly full and only existing family members are allowed to be buried here.
