Add PhotosDefunct cemetery. In 1935 the city of Washington approved a WPA "Beautification Project" to grade the entire cemetery, plant grass, and provide a single headstone in a "Memorial Park" commemorating the cemetery. Families had the option to request headstones be moved to other local cemeteries, but bodies were not moved (with a few exceptions) as many of the burials were over 100 years old. The city ordered a survey of the cemetery prior to its destruction, and the survey results can be found in "Cemeteries of Daviess County, Indiana, Compiled 1986-1988" by Barbara Sims Waggoner, Vol V, pp. 282-295. Over time, the "Memorial Park" land was used for the Washington High School Gymnasium, which now stands over the cemetery. Headstones for veterans who had been buried here were moved to/created in Pioneer Park (cemetery #1970289), which is located next to the old cemetery's location.
Located on the southwest corner of the intersection of NE 7th Street and Bedford Road.
