From the red light in Clifton at the intersection of State Highway 6 and 219, go south on SH 6 for 8.1 miles to FM 854, taking a right and going .7 mile to a metal farm gate on the right, which has a small, wooden, brown sign, "Scrutchfield Cemetery," on the fence. Turn right and go through the gate, down a faint driveway/trail, between two residences, through another metal gate, driving into a pasture with no visable driveway, through another gate and into another pasture. The cemetery then can be seen about 100 yards behind a grove of liveoak trees. The pasture is smooth and accessible, but not during inclement weather. Please remember this is private property, and the Texas rule of thumb says to always leave a gate just like you found it. You may be greeted by a friendly herd of donkeys looking for a handout!
Description:
This small family cemetery is located on private property once known as the "Old Prosser Place." It is now owned and/or leased by Mary Prosser Deanes and Randy and Angie Duke. The cemetery is completely fenced and is very well kept. Although on private property, it is open and accessible to the public year round, but only during good weather. It is the only cemetery in Bosque County designated by the Texas Historical Commission as a "Texas Historic Cemetery." The designation honors L. H. Scrutchfield and his wife, Nancy Roberts Scrutchfield, as "Citizens of the Republic of Texas, 1836 to 1846." L.H. Scrutchfield has two other historic markers and was a Confederate soldier.
