The oldest marked grave in Erie Cemetery is that of Esma Norene Mosher who died in 1882. As burials were not consistent until 1900, it is possible that the cemetery was officially established around then, and that perhaps the oldest few graves preceding 1900 were simply moved there later. The oldest person by year of birth in the cemetery is Celinda (Wilcox) Delameter, who was born in 1811.
Though located in the country, just northwest of the town of Erie, the cemetery is still within the townsite plat. Its size is 10.03 acres and it is located in the NE1/4 of the NW1/4 of Section 16, Erie Township, Cass County, North Dakota.
The cemetery is platted into eight blocks. Each block contains four quadrants, and each quadrant consists of several lots. Each lot consists of individual graves or "plots." About five acres of the cemetery's land is currently platted into a cemetery, and the other five acres (south half) is farmed.
On June 10, 1953, articles of incorporation of the Erie Cemetery Association, Inc., were signed/filed by Clark Jenkins, James Beith, Cledith Dows, Charlotte Schroeder, and Mervin Olson. These incorporators were the first board of trustees of the association, and of those trustees, Clark Jenkins was elected Chairman of the Board, and Mervin Olson, Secretary-Treasurer.
Two other committees were then established. The constitution and bylaws committee consisted of John Conrad and Willis Schroeder. The finance committee consisted of Wesley Morrow, Lyle Schroeder, and John McLeod. The bylaws were adopted on January 15, 1954.
It seems that prior to the organization of the cemetery in 1953, that some sort of cemetery association must have existed and had disbanded at some point prior to then. At the time of the reorganization of the association, a lot of volunteer work contributed to the beauty of the present cemetery and this volunteer work continues today.
In September, 1953, 100 peony plants were purchased from the Buffalo Cemetery (Buffalo, ND) at 75 cents apiece. Elm trees were planted along the south side of the cemetery plat in 1954.
In 1989, thirty-two evergreens, donated by Lynn Kyser and John Dows, were planted on east and west perimeters. In 1993, sixty green ash trees were planted around the south perimeter and twenty-four red splendor crabs were planted in the middle.
The Dokken-Schroeder Post of the American Legion (Erie, ND), has held an annual Memorial Day program at the cemetery for many decades, which has always been a well-attended community outreach event.
The following persons served on the board of trustees during the 1953-1999 time period: Walter Bellin, Lydia (Viestenz) Schroeder, Wayne Hill, Wayne Berndt, Marjorie (Bissett) Conrad, Ralph Kephart, Lynn Kyser, Louis Rieke, Bob Schroeder, Jack Peach, Zelda Kyser, Orvin Godejohn, Helen Dows, and John Dows.
Recent sextons of the cemetery have included Louis Rieke, Bob Kyser, John Dows, and Todd Viestenz.
In 1999, the Mid-Century Homemakers Club indexed the cemetery, wrote of its history, and compiled this information into a book, dated May 1, 1999. Proceeds from the sale of the book went to the Erie Cemetery Association.
Several memorials and permanent fixtures have been installed in the cemetery. As of the mid-2020s, these consist of a bell memorial, maintenance shed, flag pole, veterans memorial (installed ca. 2010), and main gate with marquee arch (installed ca. 2015).
A generous donation from a family trust in the early 2020s helped ensure the perpetual care fund of the cemetery would reach the necessary amount to take care of the cemetery in perpetuity. Many other donations have been received over the years through memorials, cemetery care, etc.
The Erie Cemetery Association continues to operate as a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the Erie Cemetery.
