AISD namesakes

I have been teaching for AISD for nine years. When I started working at my school, I noticed a picture in the hallway of the namesake of our school; however, there was nothing around the picture that told me about her. I turned to our school's website to learn a little bit about the lady our school was named after. After all, she must have been a very accomplished lady to have the school named after her. When I went to the website,I was unable to find any information about Odeal Pearcy. I turned to the internet. I googled her name.... again, nothing. I was kind of frustrated that I was unable to find anything about the lady that our school was named after. This summer, I was wondering how many campuses had anything on their website about their school's namesake. Sadly, very few had anything about the namesake of their school. To me, the schools were named after these people because they built a legacy of some sort in our district over a period of many years, yet very few schools deem them important enough to give them a link and a small biography on their school website. Surely, I can't be the only one who wonders about these people! That is when I got the idea to start a virtual cemetery on Find a Grave. This is a work in progress. I am in the process of finding out all of the deceased namesakes in AISD so that they can be linked to this cemetery. My goal is to eventually get a picture of each of the educators and to get some information on each of them so that they will have a permanent place on the internet, even if it's only through a Find a Grave virtual cemetery. I have started gathering obituaries and have found a wealth of information on each of these remarkable people.
