Julia Fae "Judy" Beckham was called home Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, after spending three days in joyous celebration!
Celebration of life: 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, 300 S. Center St., Arlington. Interment: 2 p.m. in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Arlington Funeral Home, 1221 E. Division St., Arlington.
Julia was born June 6, 1924, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas to Marion Martin Warren and Lucy Ann McDonald. She spent the first 12 years of her life at the McDonald family homestead in Sherman.
Judy, as she was known most of her life, moved to Dallas in 1936, met the love of her life, "Beck," and they both graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941. While Beck served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, she completed her education at Texas Woman's University in Denton, earning a degree in design in 1945 and later a master of art degree in weaving in 1974.
Upon graduation, Judy worked for Neiman-Marcus in Dallas in its design department, where she was trained by the elegant Carrie Neiman. Judy was known for her own elegance, her sense of style, her dignity and her grace. It has been said that she was the epitome of a graceful woman who lived a life of purpose.
Beck's ship was scheduled to return to Puget Sound in October, and he asked her to meet his ship at the pier. They were married in Seattle, Wash., on Oct. 25, 1945. Having both spent several years in single-parent homes, marriage was a commitment for life in their eyes, and they celebrated 57 years and four children together before Beck went to heaven! They shared a love for Christ and a love for family, especially children and students around the world! Education was first and foremost for both of them as both were teachers. Judy often said that Beck was her first teacher as he taught her how to drive, he taught about his faith and he tried to "show her" the world and gave her the confidence to undertake challenges! Beck once said that what really endeared Judy to him was her "dancing." He was always in love with her and loved her laid-back nature. He admired her serenity and her easy way with children.
Judy earned a teaching certificate and after being a stay-at-home mom, began teaching in the Arlington ISD in 1966. She taught at both Nichols Junior High and Ferguson Junior High and then led the K-12 art program from 1973 until she retired. During her career she was actively involved and recognized in numerous art and education associations. A highlight was being named Outstanding Art Educator of both the Texas Art Education Association and the National Education Association! She was honored by Texas Gov. Ann Richards and columnist Liz Smith when she was named as a charter recipient of the Legacy of Women Award in 1994. In 2001, the Arlington ISD honored Judy by naming its newest elementary school in her honor.
She was an active member and deacon's wife of First Baptist Church of Arlington, an active member and past president of the Arlington Museum of Art and on the boards of numerous community organizations. She had a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, students, teachers and friends who shared her zest for life! She was a role model and mentor to her children and to so many teaching dignity and grace and unconditional love but she was "everybody's Nana"!
She was preceded in death by her father, Marion; her mother, Lucy; and her stepfather, Dallas T. Renfro. She was also predeceased by her devoted husband of 57 years, Charles Albert Beckham; her beloved son, Charles Andrew Beckham; and one brother, Hubert C. McDonald.
Survivors: Her children, Cindi Cunningham and husband, Jim, Carolyn Wood and Chris Beckham and wife, Julie, all of Arlington. "Nana" will be forever remembered by her grandchildren, Amy Hancock and husband, Josh, Jeff Cunningham and wife, Riann, Michael Cunningham, David Beckham and wife, Jessica, Rachel Mull and husband, Mike, Zach Wood, Josh, Sami and Jacob Beckham. She delighted in her precious great-grandchildren, Aaron Lee Beckham and Julia Cole Cunningham. She was the "mom" to Sam Houston High School's American Field Service student, Noemi "Mimi" Stemphelet, in 1967-68. Mimi just spent three weeks with her American "mom" this past summer and they had a beautiful reunion! Judy leaves behind her niece, Carol McDonald Palmer, husband, Doug, and family, and her nephew, Brian McDonald, wife, Beth, and family. Through marriage and heart, she has been forever attached to Elizabeth Beckham and her children, Derek, Sarah and Katelin of Dallas, as well as her nephews, Richard Beckham of Illinois and his family and Mark Beckham of California. Additionally surviving Julia are her half brothers, Gerald Warren and Marion Warren Jr., and half sisters, Cristel Warren and Louise Collins.
