Bio

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto [Ontario, Canada] was established in 1985 and is one of seven Jewish genealogical societies in Canada. It is a member of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies and its over 75 member organizations.

JGS Toronto maintains the burial information for Toronto and many other Ontario Jewish cemeteries (and Jewish sections of other Ontario cemeteries) in the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR). JOWBR is a database of names and other identifying information from Jewish cemeteries and burial records worldwide, from the earliest records to the present. JOWBR's aim is to catalogue extant data about Jewish cemeteries and burial records worldwide.

As part of this effort, by 2013, JGS Toronto had photographed virtually all headstones in Toronto and area Jewish cemeteries. Efforts are now underway to add these photographs to the JOWBR records as well as to update the records with more recent headstones.

For information regarding a Toronto or Ontario Jewish burial, or to request a headstone photograph, please first consult JOWBR at https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/ [free registration to the JewishGen website is required] to locate the burial information (if it exists). If so, please note the cemetery AND SECTION names, as well as the plot information, when creating Find-a-Grave records. Photo requests are monitored on a regular basis and we will post any existing photos in response. If we do not have a photo in our files, we will try to fulfill your request in a future cemetery visit. [Note that cemetery visits generally occur only in spring and summer; new headstones are generally not erected during late fall and winter months.]

Permission is granted to add photos which we have provided -- with attribution -- to your family tree and/or other relevant websites.
