Bio

Hi. I'm a Jewish genealogist in the Maritime provinces. My family was one of the founding families of my own community. My goal, other than my own family research, is to ensure that our Jewish cemeteries in the Maritimes are accurately documented, both here and elsewhere.

Feel free to contact me with Jewish genealogy questions related to the Maritime provinces and I will do my best to assist you.

If you aren't Jewish and manage headstones in a Jewish cemetery, please understand how important the grave inscriptions are to us and that if I (or anyone) takes the time to translate the stone's inscription, that information is very important. It's also vital that the Hebrew be legible if taking photos of stones in a Jewish cemetery. If you're managing a memorial from a minority group that you yourself are not part of, please be polite and kind. There's no need for hostility.

I am always happy to answer questions and help out others and pay forward the kindness I've received from individuals on here who have helped me in locating the headstones of relatives outside my province (and who turned them over to my care without even being asked). I am more than happy to do the same.

I do my utmost best to fully document each memorial in the Jewish cemeteries, including attempting to connect family members which often includes doing research as well as translating the stones to the best of my ability. If you happen to find an error in translation, please do let me know so I can fix it. Having a stone's inscription typed out is also vitally important to the visually impaired. That section exists for a reason.

No one should be declining accurate transcriptions.
Making the entire inscriptions ALL CAPS makes it harder to read, looks terrible and isn't accurate. Please respect the effort people put in to transcribe a headstone. And please consider those who are visually impaired and use screen readers. It makes no sense to deny an accurate transcription and say "it's on the photo". Not everyone can see the photo or read it. Likewise, it's a section made available for the purpose of using it. It boggles my mind the amount of times I've made an effort to transcribe a stone only to have it rejected because either the person has no online etiquette and thinks the whole thing should be in CAPS or I'm told the photo is enough. Why reject someone's efforts if you can't be bothered to complete the memorial yourself.

Gender fields should be added where known. This helps when importing to genealogy software and is simply respectful. It makes no sense to decline someone's gender marker and then claim "it's obvious they are X". The site put that section in for a reason and it's lazy to leave it blank.

Census records provide valuable information but are not always accurate. Please understand, that birth places, name spellings and even birth dates are often incorrect on a census.

Please feel free to add any headstone photos I've taken to your own tree. You don't need my permission. No one owns copyright over your loved ones. I choose to volunteer my time to ensure fully accurate memorials. I do this for others who are searching for loved ones. You do not need my permission to copy any information in any memorials I've added (or anyone else's). If you want to use one of my photos for commercial purposes, please contact me.

Am Yisrael Chai!

*A note: I do not feel it appropriate to tie a divorced couple together in death. In many cases, those individuals no longer liked one another and would certainly not want to be linked together after passing. Find A Grave has no rules requiring divorced couples be connected so I will maintain my policy unless those rules change. If Find A Grave adds in a way to show the couple divorced, then I'll remove this personal policy. I only enacted it after someone tried to badger me into connecting a divorced couple who hated one another. I won't do that.
