Bio

I have avidly done genealogy on Ancestry.com since October of 2002 to research all of my paternal Ortiz, Sanchez, Gonzales, Gallegos, Montaño, Tapia, Baca and Bustamante family surnames plus my maternal Montoya, Gonzales, Castellano, Sena, Garcia, Valdez, Mestas, and Martinez family surnames. This of course includes all of their extended ancestors. Becoming a member and contributor on Find a Grave has given me a greater sense of love, peace and admiration for all of my ancestors. So just knowing about their final resting place of my family members and close friends that have passed on to their eternal life is a great honor for me. Additionally, I have done extensive genealogy on my wife Beatrice Sena-Ortiz's side of the family. This includes the Sena, Valencia, Garcia, Ortiz, Quintana, Blea, Gonzales and Rivera surnames plus their extended ancestry or family lines. We share Bernardino Sena (b. abt 1687 - Tezcuco,Valle de Mexico, Nueva España) as our common 7th great grandfather. Bernardino Sena died on 11 Nov 1765 and is buried inside the San Miguel Mission Church in Santa Fe. I am a direct descendant of Nicolas Ortiz and Mariana de Vargas Barba Coronado, who are my 8th great grandparents. Nicolas and Mariana were members of the second largest group of settlers which arrived in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early morning hours of June 23, 1694. Almost all the members of this group of settlers consisted of family groups and people designated as "Españoles" which were recruited in Mexico City between March and September 1694 by Spanish Governor Don Diego de Vargas as a part of the Spanish Resettlement of New Mexico. Coincidently, Bernardino Sena was part of this same group that arrived in Santa Fe on June 23, 1694. Family names brought to New Mexico by this group included Ansures, Aragón, Atencio (Atienza), Bustos (Bustillos), Cárdenas, Casados, Castellanos, Cortés, García Jurado, Góngora, Jaramillo Negrete, Jirón de tejeda, Márquez de Ayala, Mascareñas, Molina, Moya, Ortiz, Quintana, Sandoval Martínez, Sena, Silva, Valdes, and Vega y Coca.

For my maternal ancestry, I have traced my roots to Bartolome Montoya (b. 1572 in Cantillana, Spain) and Sargento Mayor Hernan Martin Serrano II (b. 1556 d. 1626). They were members of the Don Juan de Oñate expedition. See "List of Men Who Were Part of the Oñate Expedition:

Bartolomé Montoya is my 10th great grandfather and Hernan Martin is my 11th great grandfather. I have done my autosomal DNA on Ancestry.com and on Family Tree DNA (AKA - FTdna.com). Additionally, I have done my Y-DNA through FTdna. I am a member of the New Mexico DNA project. My Y-DNA haplogroup is J-M172 which has traced my direct paternal lineage or ancestral roots to Spain, Italy and throughout the Mediterranean area. Prior to migrations, this haplogroup has been traced back for 25,000 years and originated in the area of the Middle East which includes Israel, Jordan and Northern Egypt. I have multiple exact and 1-step Y-DNA matches from different Ortiz branches that originated from Spain and / or Mexico who share Nicolas Ortiz as our root or common ancestor.
