Joris is the sixth of ten children and the second of four sons, named for his grandfather Joris Verwolf (1825-1896), born in the riverdike town Ameide on the southbank of the River Lek, one of the arms of the River Rhine.
Joris married on May 31, 1918 in his birthtown Ameide to Cornelia van der Zijden, who was born in Ameide too. He is then, like his father, a laborer, residing in Ameide. Next day they moved from their parental homes to Prinsengracht 60 C in Ameide, where on 28 March 1919 their first child, Teuntje, was born.
Later on he is a truck driver, but becomes unemployed in the 1930 crisis years. Then he starts to keep dairy cows, selling the milk with a dog cart in Ameide and surroundings. In 1937, when his son Adrianus died at the age of nine years, Joris was a farmer, residing at Ameide.
Joris and his wife Cornelia resided very probably, like his father, during their whole life in Ameide.
