He mustered into service as a Private on 4 Jan 1864 at Belfast, Maine - Co I, Regiment of Maine Heavy Artillery, Volunteers; he was to serve three years. On May 18, 1864, he was wounded by a gun shot during military action in Virginia and died several days later. The NARA records give several dates for his wound and death, but his mother received a Mother's pension with the effective date of May 26, 1864.
