John Gaff, of Co. G, enrolled Oct. 17, 1861 in Wolf Lake by D. Cary as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 18. He was 5Œ 10.50 tall, dark complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. Born Jul. 16, 1843 in Noble Co., IN, employed as a farmer, single, resident of Merriam, in Noble Co., IN. Deserted Oct. 7, 1862 in Perryville, KY with rank of Private. Notes: Wounded in neck at Shiloh Apr. 6, 1862, and sent to Cairo, IL, then to Simonsf General Hospital in Mound City, IL. Deserted Oct. 7, 1862, from camp near Perryville, KY, while in face of the enemy; left gun and accouterments. Married Arrena Weirich 1866. John H. Gaff filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #357881 Jun. 28, 1880; also listed 3rd MI serving Feb. 26, 1863 to Jun. 1864 as a substitute for Porter M. Hardwood, a drafted man from Maple Grove as Sgt. John H. Gaff, and joined Co. B, 5th MI serving Jun. 1864 to Jul. 1865. Resident of Noble Co., IN 1880-1910. Died Nov. 6, 1917 at Churubusco, Whitley Co., IN and buried in Christian Chapel Cemetery in Noble Co., IN.
