Velma Faye (Small) Myers

Velma Faye Myers, age 93, passed away on November 9, 2016 at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS, following a five-week acute illness.

She was born September 1, 1923 at Horton, KS to Henry O. & Hazel E. (Sleppy) Small.

She attended grade school at Horton and Hickory Grove Schools, and graduated from Horton High School in 1941.

She worked at several different Horton businesses after graduation. Her last and favorite job was as office assistant and bookkeeper at the Horton Headlight newspaper. She worked there until the early 1950’s.

She married Donald E. Myers on December 18, 1946. To this union four children were born; Dena Jo Kaeberle (Greg), Shawnee, KS, Daniel L. Myers, Overland Park, KS, Don D. Myers (Wanda), Mashpee, MA and David L. Myers (Richard), Overland Park, KS. Later in addition to being a full-time mother, she worked at various times in the Horton City Clerk’s office, as a dispatcher for the Horton Police Department, as a bus driver for USD 430 and distributed out of town newspapers to residents of Horton. She was active in the Horton United Methodist Church and served as the Church Board Secretary for a number of years. After retirement, she was an active volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels. In recent years, she enjoyed talking with people and living a fiercely independent life at her home in Horton, KS. She traveled to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in early September 2016 to visit with her son & family there and celebrate her 93rd birthday with most of her family. She became acutely ill in late September 2016 and was hospitalized from October 4, 2016 until her death.

Survivor's include her children; Greg and Dena Jo (Myers) Kaeberle, Shawnee, KS, Daniel L. Myers, Overland Park, KS, Wanda and Don D. Myers, Mashpee, MA and David L. Myers (Richard), Overland Park, KS,
a sister; Chuck and Rosemary E. (Small) Medlin, Horton, KS, six grandchildren; Justin Kaeberle, Jason Kaeberle, Eric Myers, Katherine Gehrlein (Brian), Douglas Myers and Phillip Myers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Henry O. & Hazel E. (Sleppy) Small, her husband; Donald E. Myers and a brother; Charles H. Small.

Visitation with her family will be at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton, KS on Friday November 11, 2016 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at the Horton United Methodist Church Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Horton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Horton United Methodist Church or Horton Hospital Foundation. These donations may be left at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the Horton Hospital/Clinic staff, the staff of Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS and the Hiawatha Home Health Service for their care of our mother and grandmother.
