Mary Elizabeth Ford was born in he Town of Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin, of pioneer parents, August 14, 1857. At the tender of age of eight years, death called her mother, and Mary Elizabeth, the second eldest of six children, at once resumed the duties of her departed mother, caring for the youngest children with true motherly devotion, and attending to the many duties incident to the farm wife of the early frontier. Her youthful life was one of strict attention to duty. It was no pastime, but she carried on, with love in her heart, happy that her life was one of great usefulness. Thus, a sturdy, self reliant character was developed, which marked her throughout her adult years, and endeared her to all whom she came in contact. On Christmas Day, 1877, she was united in marriage to Franklin A. Gress, a native of Pennsylvania, who came with his parents to Wisconsin in infancy. The couple began farming on the farm now known to be the old Gress homestead, four miles west of Edgerton. There they lived, tilled the soil, until 1920, when failing health required that the burdens of farm life be handed over to their son, Arthur. This son still carries out the old family traditions on the parental homestead. Mr. & Mrs. Franklin Gress, however, moved to Edgerton at that time, the husband passing away March 11, 1924. Four children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Gress. They are Mabel (Mrs. Thomas J. Wileman); Agnes (Mrs. George Van Valin; Sadie (Mrs. James Keller), and Arthur, above mentioned. On Sunday evening at seven o'clock Mrs. Gress quietly passed to the great unknown. She has been in declining health for the past two years, and the Gress residence at 506 W. Rollin Street, Edgerton, has been under the constant care of loving hands. Since the death of Mr. Gress, a sister-in-law, has made her home there, and has been a constant companion. The devotion of these two sister-in-laws added comfort during the prolonged illness of the deceased. Beside the four children, eleven grandchildren, and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors morn the passing of this wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the late home of the deceased at 1:30 o'clock and at the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock p.m. and burial was made at the Fassett Cemetery, Rev. R.J. Bailey officiating. The pallbearers were six grandsons: Franklin and Lawrence Wileman, Lee and Evan Van Valin and Harold and Stanley Keller. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Anna Ford, Mrs. Bessie McGlynn, Mrs. Malcolm Stewart, Miss Leo Ford, William Ford, Mrs. Mary Ford, Miss Margaret Ford, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Stafford, Mr. and Mrs. Wilmarth Davison and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gessert, of Janesville; Ray Ford, Watertown; Hurley Ford and Mrs. Cora Fonda, Milwaukee; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mass and Misses Emma and Ida Altemus, Stoughton.
