Little is known about Ephraim's young years, other that he was born in North Carolina. He married Mary Danley in Tennesse, about 1824. They had a family of 12 children.

The family lived in Missouri,Illnois and Iowa, before coming west to California in 1857/58. Today there are many of his descendant living in California and Oregon.

After the death of his wife, Mary Danley in 1870, Ephraim moved to the Woodland area to be near his son's James, Ransom and Johnson. It was there that he died on October 18,1872,

Mary Danley is buried in the Pioneer Pleasant Grove Cemetery, in Sebastopol, California, next to her daughter, Melissa Gardner.
