From Evelyn Potter Park, "The Pierre Gerardy Family in America," 1979, p. 116:

Henrietta Christel, daughter of John George and Christiana (Lindner) Christel, was born March 2 , 1841, at Springsdorf, Falkenberg, Silesia, Prussia, [which is now part of Poland]. She came to America with her parents in 1858, locating at Palermo, near Wathena, Kansas. Services were held at the Wathena German Methodist Church after her death on April 24, 1916. Interment was at Bellemont Cemetery, Wathena, Kansas. Henrietta was married March 3, 1862, at the home of her parents to John Frederick Meidinger, the son of John and Catherine Meidinger. He was born October 27, 1834, in Wurtemberg, Germany, and died July 20, 1918, at Hiawatha, Kansas.

The Christel and Meidinger families came to America from the port of Bremen, Germany, on the ship Republic with the Christel family. Though they were from widely separated parts of Germany, they sailed on the same ship and settled near each other in Doniphan County, Kansas. They were listed as follows on the ship's passenger list:

#166. J. F. Meidinger, 53, male, from Wurtenberg, farmer
#167. Christiania Meidinger, 46, female, going to Kansas
#168. Johs . Friedke Meidinger, 22 female, from Wurtenberg
#169. Jacob Meidinger, 20 male
#170 . Chatarina Meidinger, 15 female
#17l. Gottfried Meidinger, 13 male

No doubt the Meidinger and Christel families also sailed up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers together .

Although the Meidingers and Christels came on the same ship, Henrietta and John Frederick may not have met until they arrived in Kansas. John Frederick Meidinger came to America i n 1852, landing in New York . He made his way west to Iowa and Nebraska and worked for awhile in Omaha , Nebraska. He may even have gone on to Kansas and arranged a place for the Meidinger family before their arrival. Though the mother is listed above as Christiania, her name is said to have been Catherine (confirmed by census). The mother, Catherine, is said to be buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Doniphan Co., Kansas, while John died at Hiawatha, Ks., and was buried there. Henrietta and John Frederick had eight children.

1. Emma Bertha, b. Mar. 19, 1863
