Crossville Chronicle August 15, 1935

John Angel, aged 55 years, died at his home in Mayland Wednesday of last week after being a sufferer for several years with high blood pressure and other complications.
Funeral services were held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Baptist church, Crossville, with burial in the Smith's Chapel cemetery west of Pleasant Hill. After the church services, Crossville Masonic Lodge took charge graveside. Mr Angel was a member of Ridgedale Lodge, Chattanooga.
Mr Angel is survived by his widow and 2 sons, Aubrey, Harriman; Rev Harold C, at home in Mayland.
Mr Angel served as City Marshall of Crossville in the early days of its incorporation and in such an acceptable manner that he won the respect and confidence of both those who stood for law enforcement as well as those who from time to time violated it.
He went from here to Spring City where he served in the same capacity for a time and later became a member of the Chattanooga police force in November 1917, where he served as a uniformed officer for 10 years. For several years he was one of the active raiders against illicit stillers and liquor sellers. He also served as a member of the Lupton City force. At one time he was prominently mentioned for sheriff of Hamilton county, but did not enter the race. He also worked in Chattanooga as a plain clothes detective. Throughout his long years of service as a peace officer and while on the detective force in Chattanooga, no word of wrongdoing was ever charged against him.
All in all he was a most likeable gentleman and a peace officer of far more than average ability. At the time of his passing he had been living here about 2 years.
