John W. Ackert of Newton, NJ, for many years a resident of our village, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Stanley Decker, at Newton on November 26, 1923, aged seventy-eight years. Mr. Ackert was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. E., 20 (Old Twentieth) which went from Kingston. He served nearly five years in the army. Mr. Ackert will be missed by his old comrades who are few in number now. He leaves three sons, Lewis and George of New Paltz and John of Poughkeepsie; also four daughters, Mrs. Stanley Decker of Newton, NJ., Mrs. Anna Williams of Newark, N. J., Mrs. John Scott of Leonia, N. J., and Mrs. Frank Judson of Goshen. funeral services were held at Newton with interment at New Paltz on Wednesday, November 28. The American Legion of New Paltz took charge of the grave. [Note: He served in the 20th NYS militia, which was the 80th NYS Volunteers]
