On Saturday, April 27, 1996, Thomas Page Nelson, Sr., passed away in Martha Jefferson Hospital; beloved husband of Penny N. Nelson; loving father of Hugh Thomas Nelson, IV, of Atlanta (wife, Stephanie) and Thomas Page Nelson, Jr. of Middlebrook, VA (wife Poppet). Also survived by his brother, Dr. William Rankin Nelson, of Denver, and five grandchildren, James Richard Nelson at Atlanta, Kimberly Jo Nelson at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, 1LT Thomas Page Nelson, III, serving with the Army in Panama, Sarah Elizabeth Nelson of Georgetown, Wash DC, and Jenifer Lauren Nelson at Asbury College, Kentucky. A memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA, on Saturday, May 4, 1996 at 11:00 a.m... The interment was at the Riverview Cemetery in the family plot.
Thomas Page Nelson (Tom), born n September 25, 1920, was a native of Charlottesville—8th generation of his family in Virginia—descended from Dr. Thomas Walker of Castle Hill, founder of Charlottesville and Gov. and General Thomas Nelson, Jr., of Yorktown, Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He is the son of Dr. Hugh Thomas Nelson, Jr. and Edith Rankin Nelson.
His father, grandfather, and great grandfather were all physicians living on High Street where he was born. His grandfather, Hugh Thomas Nelson, Sr., was one of several cofounders of Martha Jefferson Hospital. He attended Stonefield School, Woodberry Forrest School, Tome School, and the University of Virginia. At the University he joined the Zeta Psi Fraternity and the TRIGON Engineering Society. He was treasurer of the Class of 1943. During WWII, he was employed by the Southern Welding and Machine Company, manufacturers of war material. Later, he became associated with the Meadowbrook Pharmacy and the Meadowbrook Hardware Company. For many years he was manager of the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate School's Post Exchange, from which he retired in 1985. After retirement he was associated with J. C. Penny Company for seven years.
Mr. Nelson was past Virginia State President of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and has been its Honorary Flag Bearer Yorktown Day for many years. He was the recipient of the SAR's Silver Good Citizenship Medal, the Virginia Medal of Merit, the Patriot Medal Meritorious Service Medal. He was past State President of the Huguenot Society, pas Vice-President and Treasurer of the Albemarle County Historical Society, Chaplain General of the Order of the Three Crusades, past President of the Charlottesville Navy League, Secretary of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Jamestown Society, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Order of the First Families of Virginia, honorary membership in the Thomas Nelson, Jr. SAR Chapter in Hampton, a charter member of the Page-Nelson Society, and the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the USA, and other societies.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and former Vestryman. The family requests donations to the Thomas Page Nelson Memorial Fund at the Christ Episcopal Church, 120 W. High St., Charlottesville, Va., 22902. Tentative plans are to use the funds to produce a book(s) derived from family and church information on the history of Christ Church and Charlottesville (Virginia) history in memory of Thomas Page Nelson. The proceeds from sales will go back into the memorial fun to further this effort or for scholarships.
