SHAFTSBURY - Edward C. Armstrong, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington Dec. 9, 1924, he was the son of Edward Keith and Effie (Greer) Armstrong, and received his education in local schools.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific with the Americal Division on the island of Bogaville and in the Philippines where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart and a Silver Star.



Mr. Armstrong married the former Lina Greene Sept. 2, 1950, in Shaftsbury.

In earlier years, he was employed at the former Paquin's Market and later worked at General Cable Co. in Pownal for 28 years prior to retirement.

He was a member of Bennington Club, Elks Lodge 567, Moose Lodge 1233, VFW Post 1332, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4 and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington.

In earlier years, Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department and a coach in NorShaft Little League. He also enjoyed his camp in Bacon Hollow and riding with his motorcycle club.

Survivors include his wife and a son, Alan Armstrong, both of Shaftsbury; a sister, Marion Stark of Searsburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two siblings, Ethel Paquin and Raymond Armstrong.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home with Kenneth Coonradt, chaplain of Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4, American Legion Post 69 or the Vermont Heart Association, in care of Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
