John B. Adkins of Costa Rica, Central America, formerly of southern California and Paxton, Illinois, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, in Costa Rica.

He was born Nov. 22, 1925 on a farm near Paxton, Illinois, the son of Samuel Tilden and Laura Ellen Pennington Adkins. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; one half- brother, Estel R. Adkins; two half-sisters, Ethel and a still-born; two sisters, Beulah B. Kamerer and Barbara Maulding and four brothers, Samuel, Jesse, Wilbur and Elijah.

He married Beatrice Nobel in 1948. They had one daughter, Bonnie Lee Swartz; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sisters, Rebecca I. Mabry and Josephine Adkins Skonberg; a brother-in-law, Chalon D. Maulding and numerous nieces and nephews.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a torpedoman's mate.
