Lena M. Horn Akers, 92, of Columbus, passed away at 2:55 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 1999, at St. John's Regional Medical Center of Joplin, Mo., after an illness.
She was born October 27, 1906, at Cherokee City, Arkansas, to Cecile Burton and Carrie Salina Harrison Horn. The family moved to Chetopa, where she attended school and graduated from Chetopa High School in 1927. She also attended Pittsburg Stste University.
She married Lloyd Akers on August 14, 1929, at Carterville, Missouri. He preceded her in death January 12, 1990.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Columbus, and a charter member of the Golden Agers Fun Club of Columbus, which she and her husband helped form.
Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Johnson, of Columbus, Opal Atkinson of Denver, Colo., Alberta DeNomme, of Columbus, and Rachel Clingenpeel, of Mims, Florida. A brother, Charles Horn, of Russellville, Ark., 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Herbert Akers, two brothers, John and Leo Horn, and a sister, Ina Burnside.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Rev. Garland Bohn officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
