Virginia Marie Akers Johnson, age 85, died February 3, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO.

She was born August 11, 1932 in Columbus, KS, the first child of Lloyd and Lena Horn Akers.

She married (Howard) Dale Johnson on July 24, 1951 and immediately went with him to southern California where he was serving on active duty in the US Navy. When his naval service was completed they returned to Columbus to live the rest of their lives. Dale died May 3, 2009.

Virginia graduated from Cherokee County Rural High School in 1950. She had worked at Seven Gables café in Columbus during high school and after graduation, at the Spencer plant in Riverton. When the Johnsons returned to Columbus she worked for a time at the ammunition plant in Parsons. Later, she was a substitute rural mail carrier out of the Columbus post office.

Virginia was an active member of First Christian Church in Columbus, where she had led children’s Bible School and taught children’s then adult Sunday school for decades. When her daughters were young she had also been a Girl Scout Leader and served as cookie chairperson for several years. Her greatest enjoyment was participating in her daughters’ and grandchildren’s activities.

Surviving are two daughters, Renee Bridwell (Steve) of Wichita, and Denise Bowker (Jeff) of Yukon, OK; three grandchildren, Michael-Paul Bridwell, Sarabeth Bridwell Eichenlaub, and Cassandra Watts Shirley, each of whom are married with two children; and three sisters, Opal Atkinson, Denver, CO; Alberta Denomme, Booneville, MO; and Rachel Clingenpeel, Titusville, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Herb Akers.

She was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus for cremation. A memorial service is planned for July 27 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Columbus, 10:00 a.m., with inurnment preceding. If further information is needed, contact either daughter through the funeral home.
