Funeral services for Hazel Spears are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Rusk, with the Rev. Don Copeland and the Rev. Donnie Barron officiating.
Burial will be in Old Palestine Cemetery in Alto.
Services are under direction of Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Hazel Spears, 91, of Rusk passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Oct. 17, 2012. She was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Alto to the late Robert and Annie Lindsey, being the fourth of six children. She was always proud of the fact she was the first in her family to graduate from high school. Soon after high school she married Coy M. Spears on Dec. 23, 1939. They lived in Alto before moving to Houston, where they lived when their only child, Wayne, was born. Coy learned the trade of welding, and began traveling and working on the pipelines, working his way up to spreadman for Brown & Root of Houston. Hazel, determined to keep the family together, packed their young son up and traveled with Coy for the next 15 years, living throughout Texas and Louisiana before returning to East Texas and settling in Rusk in the fall of 1958. She was a homemaker and a helpmate to her husband. Her family and home were her life. After her husband died in 1987, she continued to look after their beloved ranch and maintained the family home place. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rusk, and was proud of her strict Baptist upbringing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Spears; parents, Robert "Bob" and Annie Lindsey; brothers, Floyd, Benny D., Robert Ray and Ralph; and sister, Lolas Cherry.
She is survived by her son, Wayne Spears and wife Debbie of Tyler; her granddaughters, Beth Ellis of Austin and Jennifer Lang of Houston; and her great-granddaughters, Emma Ellis, Madelyn Ellis and Erin Lang.
Pallbearers will be deacons of First Baptist Church, Rusk.
Visitation with the family will be from noon until service time on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Rusk.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to First Baptist Church, Rusk, or The Hospice of East Texas Foundation.
