Jay Baker, of Co. E, enrolled Oct. 16, 1861 in Springfield by Capt. Cuppy as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 19. He was 5Œ 7 tall, light complexion, brown eyes, and light hair. Born Nov. 1844 in Stark Co., OH, employed as a farmer, single, resident of S. Whitley, in Whitley Co., IN. Mustered out at the end of the war Sep. 14, 1865 in Nashville, TN with rank of Sergeant. Notes: Actually just 17 at muster in. Sick in Calhoun Feb. 9, 1862. Reenlisted Jan. 1, 1864. Promoted Corp. Jan. 16, 1865; 5th Sergeant Apr. 1, 1865. On leave Jul. 9, 1865. Reduced to ranks, reason not given, Aug. 20, 1865. Due US for transportation $3.50. Jay M. Baker filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #1022972 on Jan. 22, 1900 in IL. Resident of Joliet, IL, 1889-1892. Died Sep. 11, 1906; buried Mt.
