Karl came to Iowa in the 1850's to join his children. He was a jack of all trades in Baden. In Schutterzell he was bürgermeister, master forester and inn keeper. In Ichenheim, along with his brother Joseph, he was a forester to the Grand Duke of Baden, and of course, before all that he was a soldier in Napoleon's Grand Army. Parents of Karl were Karl Hubertus Bickel born 1789 and Karolina Schwab 1793-1839.

On 11 Oct 1842 Karl married Katharina Roth in Ichenheim, Offenburg, Germany. From this union eleven children were born: Ludwig, Mariah, Charles, Sophia, Josephine, Wilhelmina, Katharina, Maximilian, Carolina, Amelia and Herman.
