Maximilian (given name) was born at sea to Karl Ferdinand Bickel and Katharina Roth. Some census' say he was born in Louisiana, Iowa or Germany. The 1940 census for Clarence Arthur Bickel says born at sea. The family story was he was named for the ship that brought them to America that ported in New Orleans. In 1882 Maximilian married Mary Elizabeth Carter. From this union six children were born: Frank Nelson, Carl Albert, Clarence Arthur (twin with Carl), Charles F, Louis Wilbur and Alice E.
