Orlan went by several names over the years - Orland, Orlan, O.B. and O. Butler.

In the 1870 Census taken in Liberty Twp., Jackson Co., OH, Orland Harper, 5, born in OH, was living with his parents, Robert and Marinda Harper and his siblings and two step brothers (Robert’s first wife, Mary Gleasen/Gleason, had died in 1861). By 1880 the step brothers had moved on. Orland B. Harper, 15, was living with his parents and siblings.

ca. 1888, Orland B. Harper married Margaret G. Harper. Sometime between 1880 and 1900, the family moved to Point Pleasant, Mason Co., WV, where he lived the remainder of his life. In the 1900 Census, Margaret was 31, born in OH. They had a son Ralph B. Harper, 9, born WV, and they were living on Viand St. in Point Pleasant. The census records that Margaret had borne 2 children, one of whom was living. Orland was a furniture dealer, an occupation he followed, except perhaps around 1920.

Some time between 1900 and 1904, Margaret Harper apparently died, as in the 1910 Census, O.B. Harper had been married to Lulu G. Harper for 6 years. Lulu Genevieve, nee Comstock, was 34, born in WV. Their children were Gertrude L. (nee Lula Gertrude), 5, born in WV, and George O., 3, born in WV. They were living on Viand St., Lewis District, Mason Co., WV, with Dona S. Hysel, a servant, 24, born in WV. Lulu had borne 2 children, both living. O.B. was a furniture manager. By 1910 Orlan’s son Ralph B. was on his own. He was subsequently recorded living in Cleveland, OH.

When the census taker filled out the 1920 Census form, he apparently did not write darkly enough and someone wrote over the data, rendering it almost indecipherable. The name looks like O. B_____ Harper who was head of household on First St., Point Pleasant. Also recorded were Pearl (might be Lulu) Harper, 47, born OH; Lena Harper, 20, born WV; Ross Harper, 18, born WV. O.B. was an undertaker. The accuracy of this information is questionable, and the ages don’t match the two children listed in 1910 and 1930. The principal reason for believing this is Orlan is that in the 1910 and 1930 Censuses, Orlan was living next door to his brother Lee (nee Leander) Harper, and Lee is listed very close to O. B. in the 1920 Census. Plus Lee was an undertaker, so it is possible Orlan worked for his brother for a time.

In 1930 Census, the family was living at 907 Viand St., Point Pleasant. Orlan B. was 65 and was a furniture merchant. Lulu was 54. Their children, L. (Lula) Gertrude Harper, now 24, was a public school teacher, and George O., 23, was a furniture salesman. They owned their home worth $3,000.

Orlan Butler Harper, born 12 Nov 1864 in Jackson Co., OH (66 years, 8 mo, 13 days old) died in Point Pleasant, Mason Co., WV on 6 Aug 1931. He was married and a merchant. He was to be buried in Loan Oak Cemetery on 9 Aug 1931. His parents were listed as Robert Harper and Marinda Byren (sic)
