Frederich Schmidgall, esteemed pioneer and "last man" of the Jackson County Chapter, Worthen Post, Grand Army of the Republic, expired at 3:30 a.m. today. He was born in Wittenberg State, Germany, November 27, 1845, and was approaching his ninety-sixth birthday.
Frederich Schmidgall was the son of Geore and Catherine Schmidgall, native Germans, and one of seven children. His brothers, Christian and Henry, were his elders. Henry died here. ...
He enlisted in February 1864 in the Northern Army, 7th Ill., Inf., Co. at DuQuoin and was in action in the battle of Altona Pass in Georgia, October 5, 1864. Then he went with Sherman in his march to the sea. He was discharged from the army in July 1865.
Upon his return to Murphysboro, he married Elizabeth Jones in December 1877 in Jackson County, Illinois.
They had one stillborn child. Fannie M., the second born, married Edgar Neal. Their son, William Edward, married Ruth Collins. Their third child, Lillian, married James Stephenson.
Rites were conducted at the First Lutheran Church, 14th and Manning Streets, after 2 p.m. Sunday. Rev. William Boatman, pastor, eulogized the deceased as a soldier and Christian. "Taps" was sounded at the grave in Tower Grove and a salute to the soldier dead was fired.
