Little Hugh met his death while riding on a sister's lap in the front seat of a Model "T" Ford. They were proceeding down a rural road when a horse and rider unexpectedly darted out from a side road right in front of the automobile. Upon striking the horse, the driver of the automobile lost control and the car was overturned. Young Hugh struck his head against the frame of the car and his neck was broken. The rider of the horse survived but the animal had to be destroyed.
