Pioneer Citizen of Macon Passes Away at 12:15 This Afternoon
Joel H. Wright, for years a resident of Macon, and pioneer citizen of Macon county, died at his home on Sheridan Street today at 12:45 p.m. The funeral will take place in Callao Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. John Harris, of Clarence, with burial in the Locust cemetery in Callao.
Mr. Wright was born September 8th, 1834, and lived to the ripe old age of 89 years. For a number of years he was a merchant in Callao and at one time was president of the bank of Callao. He had been retired from active business pursuits since his residence in Macon.
A daughter, Mrs. Ivy B. Jones and Mr. Jones made their home with Mr. Wright during his declining years and made life comfortable and pleasant for him until the last. He has been practically an invalid for some time.

JOEL H. WRIGHT
Many a heart throbbed yesterday with the sad news that "Uncle" Joel H. Wright was dead.
A kinder-hearted man never lived than "Uncle" Joel. He had a good word for everybody, and everybody liked him. In his young manhood he saw stirring times. Born way back in 1834, he recollected the nation wide pilgrimage to the gold coast in '49. He was 19 in the year of the drought--1854. There are not many now living who could recall vividly that terrible visitation, said to have been the worst dry spell ever experienced in North Missouri, and perhaps in the west. When the little mail train know as the "Pony Express"rushed across the state in 1860, Mr. Wright was one of the crowd that witnessed the spectacular event. He heard Benton, the great senator speak at Bloomington in 1856.
With all the big events of the county Mr. Wright was familiar. He could describe clearly what he saw, as his mind and memory were unusually keen for a man of his years;
The county owes a debt—an eternal debt of gratitude to such men as "Uncle" Joel. He was always a worker, a builder, and all he did was good. He loved the people and he took pride in their accomplishment.
Mr. Wright's wife—Aunt Bettie—preceded him to the better land some years ago. There never was a more congenial couple, and in addition to their strong love for each other, the Master whom they served, blessed them with a devoted daughter—Mrs. Ivy B. Jones—who did all that a loving heart could do to guide them gently and tenderly through the declining years.
