SAM WINSHIP DIES OF GUNSHOT WOUND

Funeral services for Sam Winship, 48, of Smithville, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Smithville Baptist Church with the Rev. Coy Chatham officiating. Burial was in Smithville Cemetery.

Winship died Thursday afternoon, Nov. 1 of a .22 caliber pistol bullet wound.

Newton Hancock, 74, also of Smithville, was arrested shortly after the shooting by McCurtain County Sheriff's deputies Slim Roath and Charles Stuart.

The shooting took place about 3:30 p.m. at Hancock's house, said Sheriff Bud Murphy. Winship was dead on arrival at a Mena, Ark., hospital.

Charges of murder in the second degree were filed against Hancock by the McCurtain County District Attorney's office.

Winship was born Aug. 30, 1925, at Battiest. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Merle Winship of Smithville; a son, Sam Winship, Jr., of Smithville; three daughters, Beverly Phillips of Smithville, Darlene Rose of Grannis, Ark., and Deborah Winship of Smithville; five brothers, Leo Winship, Leroy Winship, Louie Winship, Bob Winship and Isaac Winship, all of Broken Bow.

Also surviving are three sisters, Ina Caldwell of Rufe, Edna Harris and Mary Tisho, both of Broken Bow; one half brother, Anderson Winship of Broken Bow; and four grandchildren.
