Daniel Dreyer was born 21 Dec 1828 in Lutzelbourg, Lorraine, France, the son of Antoine Dreyer and Catherine Burger (or Berger), of German heritage. He was the 3rd of 9 children: Antoine, Marie Claire, Daniel, Anna Marie, Amand, Madeleine, Charles, Caroline, Rosalie.

Daniel immigrated to the US sometime around 1850. His siblings Antoine (Anthony), Amand, Charles and Rosalie Dreyer settled in Philadelphia. His siblings Caroline and Madeleine (Magdalena) also settled in Cumberland County NJ (Caroline later moved to St Louis MO). His father Antoine Dreyer, and presumably his mother Catherine, also immigrated late in life and lived with Daniel's family.

In July 1859, Daniel petitioned for naturalization in Philadelphia.

Daniel's first wife was Theodora, Nora or Dorothea. They had 3 children: Caroline, Daniel and Joseph (died after birth in 1869). Theodora also died after Joseph's birth.

In January 1870, Daniel remarried to Gertrude Pfeiffer. They had 5 children: Charles, John, Margaret, William A, and Frank J.

According to his death record, Daniel was buried in "the Catholic cemetery" near his home in Millville NJ. That would be St Mary Magdalene, the oldest cemetery. It is unknown if his grave, and Gertrude's grave, were reinterred at a later date to Holy Cross Cemetery which was created after St MM became full.
