Sarah, the eldest of eleven children of Samuel Grinnell and Catherine Morse was born on 4 October 1815 at Union, Massachusetts, which was annexed to Maine in 1820.[1] Sarah was married twice. She married 1) Richard Pearson Mitchell (1806-1862), the son of Andress and Rachel (Pearson) Mitchell on 11 May 1835 at Hope, Maine.[2]They had five children born at Maine:
- Andrew Mitchell (b. 26 Mar 1836; d. 1925)[3]m. 26 Mar 1859 at Rockport, ME, Lorana B. Adams (1838-)
- Levi Mitchell (b. 8 Sep 1837; d. 1860)[4]
- Roscoe Mitchell (b. 23 Aug 1840; d. 1858)[5]
- Bailey Grinnell Mitchell (b. 10 Jul 1845; d. 1928)[6]28 Apr 1876 at Hope, ME, Almira A. Rollins (1854-1894)
- Helen E. Mitchell (b. 10 Feb 1853; d. 21 Aug 1920, Hope, ME)[7][8]m. 16 Nov 1872 at Hope, ME, Freeman Wellman (1850-1915)
Richard Pearson Mitchell died in 1862 at Caribou, Maine.
Sarah married 2) as his third wife Lewis Wentworth (1797-1871), the son of Lemuel and Susannah (Whittemore) Wentworth in 1867. There were no children from this union. Lewis preceded Sarah in death on 18 October 1871 at Maine.
Sarah (Grinnell) Mitchell-Wentworth died on 8 October 1895 in her 80th year at Augusta, Maine.[9]She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Caribou, Aroostook, Maine.[10]
