ANN WILSON CALHOUN
(September 28, 1928 - October 2, 2012)
Ann Wilson Calhoun passed away on October 2, 2012, confident in God's everlasting love for her. She was 84. At the time of her death, Ann lived in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ann (Tempie Ann to some) was born and grew up about five miles north of Ringgold, Louisiana on a farm with her parents, James Wilson and Edna Hughes Wilson, and a large family of brothers and sisters. Ann went to school in Ringgold and graduated from Ringgold High School in 1945 where she played on the basketball team. After high school, Ann left Louisiana and lived for extended periods in Corpus Christi she married Frances ("Buck) Waters. She and her family were actively involved at St Luke's United Methodist Church. After Mr. Waters death, she moved to Richardson after marrying Bob Calhoun. She worked for many years at Forney Engineering in north Dallas and was a member at First United Methodist Church of Richardson. In 1980, Ann married Kennie Ryan and moved back to the area where she grew up as a child. She and Kennie lived on Hwy 516 near the Fryeburg crossroads. She was a member and worked at First United Methodist Church in Ringgold for a number of years. Later, she became active in the Fryeburg Baptist Church. After Kennie's death she continued to live by herself near Fryeburg until 2010 when health concerns required her to move to Corpus Christi to be near her son Wilson and his family. Ann was a great homemaker and cook. She loved entertaining and cooking fabulous cakes and pies to share with her friends. She pieced many quilt tops that are beautiful works of art. She loved living in the country where she was surrounded by beautiful trees, flowers. birds, and her favorites, the wild turkeys. Ann enjoyed playing dominos and cards, with family and friends. Most of all, she enjoyed doing nice things for others. Ann was most proud of her children and their accomplishments. Although Ann never had the opportunity to attend college, each of her children has had successful academic and professional careers. Ann stressed the importance of education and helped each of her children believe they could accomplish any goal they set for themselves and earnestly pursued. Ann's oldest daughter, Cheryl Smith (Sun City, Arizona) obtained an associate nursing degree from Kankakee Community College in Illinois and became a registered nurse. She is now retired. Daughter, Debra Waters (Breaux Bridge, Louisiana) obtained a B.A. in English from Northwestern State University and then obtained a Masters of Science degree in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She works at LSU in Baton Rouge. Ann's first son, Wilson Calhoun (married Sheryl Beaver Calhoun of Corpus Christi, Texas) graduated from the University of Texas with a B.B.A. in Marketing and then obtained his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law. He currently practices law in Corpus Christi as a sole practioner. Ann's youngest child, Mark Taylor Calhoun (married to Amy Calhoun and residing in Lansing, Kansas), obtained his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Louisiana at Airborn Division, from which he retired as a lieutenant colonel. Subsequently he was awarded a doctorate in history by the University of Kansas. He is now a professor at the School of Advanced Military Studies, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Ann is survived by her four children, five grandchildren (Chery's son, David Earl , Wilson's sons, Travis and Hayden Calhoun, and Mark's children, Anna and Taylor Calhoun), and two great grandchildren, Andrew and Alex Earl, the sons of David Earl. She is also survived by her brother Bill Wilson of Eagle Lake, Texas. Ann was a warm, generous, and loving woman. She was deeply loved by her family and many others who were lucky enough to know her. Funeral services were held at Rockett Funeral Home on October 6, 2012, followed by a graveside service at Providence Cemetery in Ringgold, Louisiana.
