Audrey M. Arensberg, 88, of Portersville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, October 4, 2012 in the Ellwood City Hospital.
She was born in Pittsburgh on May 31, 1924 to the late Harry Luff and the late Bertha Milligan Luff. She graduated from South High School in Pittsburgh. She married her late husband of over 67 years, Paul R. Arensberg, Sr. on March 28, 1942. He preceded her in death on August 7, 2009. She was a longtime member of Mountville Presbyterian Church in Portersville and had worked at Walmart in Cranberry as a greeter. She enjoyed playing cards with friends & family. Loved arts, flowers and her craft projects.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Roy Arensberg, on September 17, 2011. The last of her family, she was also preceded by ten brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Paul R. (and Bernadette) Arensberg, Jr. of Portersville, Joyce Ann (and Richard) Kassouf of Gibbon Glade, PA, Audrey M. (and Michael) Maffei of South Park, and James H. Arensberg of Portersville. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, as well as her daughter-in-law, Edna Arensberg, of Portersville.
All of these things say little about her real character and nature. As a wife she was an exemplary example. So many of us marvel at the years she and Paul were married. A true testament to both of their commitment and unconditional love. "Mom" wasn't just what she was called. It was a defining characteristic of Audrey. She applied the tried & true unconditional love to her children and grandchildren. Gave her children both roots and wings.
The kind of mom that kisses the boo boo's of little ones and never shied away from help to wrestle with life's toughest questions when her children grew up.
No Doubt she will be missed. Whether a wife, mom, Aunt, or a neighbor she is special and as such has assumed her newest and highest role, as that of Guardian in Heaven.
Her loved ones will no doubt find comfort in the knowledge of her guardian role.
Personally I never had the good fortune to know Audrey when I was growing up in the Burg. A move to Sunny California removed me from Pa. and family. But when older an interest in my family tree did provide me the good fortune to meet Audrey virtually. Later in life as I pursued my family tree interest she was initially the person who received my questions with interest and a kindness that does not always greet me when I make those cold contacts as a total stranger. In phone conversations she was warm, open, interested and eager to be helpful. No doubt something I appreciated after untold numbers of kin proved to be disinterested. She gave me a sense of comfort and ease when making my queries that I much appreciated. So in a much different way, but yet a profound way, I miss her too.
