Dr. Jean I. Caudle, 98, of Oshkosh died Friday night, May 25, 2012, at Evergreen, in Oshkosh.

Jean was born August 21, 1913 in Oshkosh the daughter of the late John,who was born in Russia and Edith (McAllister) Gorr. She married Dominic Gogolewski, he preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1950. She then married Dr. Fredrick Caudle and he preceded her in death Sept. 20, 1971.

Jean taught for 50 years, her first 12 years at various schools in the Oshkosh area and the final 38 years as a Professor of Education at UW-Oshkosh. Jean earned her Bachelor Degree at Oshkosh State Teachers College (UW-Oshkosh). She then received her Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison followed by her Doctorate Degree in Education from Boston University. Throughout her teaching career she conducted extensive research on reading techniques for both young and old. She established literacy programs both here and abroad. Jean's dedication to reading education was the focal point of her 50 years in teaching and continued into her retirement by working on reading initiatives for senior citizens.

She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Jean was a volunteer for many different organizations in the Oshkosh area. She was a member of the UW Retired Faculty, Oshkosh Downtown Rotary Club, and life member of the Winnebago Retired Teachers, National Education Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma along with many other organizations. She was an Honorary Director on the Board of Directors for the UW-O Foundation. After retirement, Jean was especially active being an advocate for the elderly through her involvement in the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG).

Jean's survivors include a brother Peter Gorr of Weyauwega; nephew Terry (Belinda ) Gorr, great-niece Brandi Gorr, great-nephew Colt Gorr of Cleburne, TX, nephew Gregory Gorr of Weyauwega, nephew Kevin (Cindy) Gorr of Kiel, niece Tracy (Jim) Kendall, great-niece Ashley Swarens of Midlothian, TX; a sister-in-law Monna Zink; step-daughters, Maxine and Marsha and special friend Debbie Thull of Omro. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a sister Margaret Gorr, a brother and sister-in-law George and Leila Gorr, and a step-daughter Margie.

A memorial graveside service for Jean will be held Monday June 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Lake View Memorial Park, Rev. Jen Czarnota officiating. Internment will follow.
