Plainfield, Cheshire, New Hampshire (residence) Hobart's Regiment, Hendee's Company, Private, (Vol. 15 page 155) (*It is unknown what volume of reference this refers to.) Taken from Roll of New Hampshire Soldiers at the Battle of Bennington August 16, 1777, complied and copyright by Geo. C. Gilmore, 1891, printed by John B. Clarke, Manchester, N.H.

DEATH: Inventory of his estate dated 9 Sep 1777; Genealogies of Plainfield NH Families; FHL film #1,307,585; Killed during the Battle of Bennington.

On 15 Sep 1774, Ephraim Joy of Killingly CT, purchased 50 acres of land for 15 pounds, in the town of Plainfield, NH from Jacob Burton & Lucy Gates of Norwich, VT who were executors of the estate of Abel Gates, deceased. (See Cheshire Co. deeds; Vol 20, pg 476).

Ephraim Joy joined the New Hampshire Militia in 1777 at Cornish NH and was dead by 9 Sep 1777, as on that date at Plainfield, NH an envoice of the moveable estate of Ephraim Joy, deceased, was filed. Interestingly, on 30 Jun 1790, widow Elizabeth (Joy) Richardson, submits an expense account, which includes funeral charges, which appears to suggest that Ephraim Joy was buried locally, probably in either Plainfield or Cornish NH, but a marked grave has not been located.

On 30 Dec 1789, Benjamin Joy 3rd, Benjamin Joy Jr. and Nathan Andrews, were named joint executors of the estate of Ephraim Joy of Plainfield, NH, deceased. It should be noted that this instrument was signed as Benjamin Joy 3rd, Benjamin Joy, Jr. and Nathan Andrews, and was witnessed by Noah Porter and Hannah Whitney. Also on this date David Kimball, Esq., and Joseph Kimball and Isaac Wilson were appointed commissioners to receive & examine claims against the estate of Ephraim Joy, deceased, who died intestate. Benjamin Joy 3rd was named as principle administrator.

On 7 & 8 Jan 1790, an inventory of the estate was taken and the estate was valued at 146 pounds, 16 shillings.

On 30 Jun 1790, at Plainfield NH, a debt was submitted against the estate of Ephraim Joy, by Elizabeth Richardson, late widow of Ephraim Joy, for monies spent to raise two minor children, Ephraim Joy Jr. and Lucy Joy; for funeral charges, and for one years provisions for the family.

On 1 Feb 1792, Benamin Joy 3rd married Lydia Hutchinson, by Rev. William Walter in the Old North Church (Episcopal, Christ Church) in Boston MA.

On 6 Mar 1793, Benjamin Joy 3rd sold the same 50 acres of land purchased by Ephraim Joy for 50 pounds in 1774, to Nathaniel Pennyman of Concord, MA for 100 pounds. Benjamin Joy 3rd acknowledged this instrument on 10 Jan 1795 and it was recorded on 15 Jun 1795 and witnessed by Nathaniel Hutchinson and Rhoda Hutchinson. (See Cheshire Co. deeds; Vol 24; pg 437).

The above mentioned debt, submitted by Elizabeth Richardson in Jun 1790, indicates that she & William Richardson were living in the area at that time, and as they are not found in the 1790 census at or near Cornish or Plainfield, NH, it is probable that they are one and the same as the William Richarson family found in the 1791 census at Hartford, Windsor Co. VT, with 1 male over 16 yrs and 3 females, and this family is still there in 1800 when they are emunerated with 1 male 45+ and two females 10-16.

In the 1810 census at Huntsburg (now Franklin) Franklin Co. VT. we find William Richardson living three houses away from Ephraim Joy, Jr. with 1 male 45+, and 1 female 45+. In 1820 we do not find William Richardson as head of household, so perhaps he has died, although a personal search (by Sally L. Guadagni) of the area cemeteries failed to locate a marked grave for him.

Note: Research on Ephraim Joy was done by Sally L. Guadagni of Newport Center, VT a 2 g g daughter.
