Police Release Companion of Augusta Woman
Jessie May Waller Kelly at a local infirmary shortly after 8 o'clock yesterday evening of a pistol wound she received late Tuesday night, and a short while after her death police released a companion of the woman whom they had detained for questioning in connection with the shooting.
The companion, (XXXXXX) was absolved of blame in the fatal shooting after both he and Mrs. Kelly had maintained that it was accidental, Woodward from the time he was taken it custody shortly after midnight Tuesday, and Mrs. Kelly, until she lapsed into unconsciousness 12 hours before her death.
Woodward's release according to Chief of Police C. J. Wilson came as a result of a conference officers had with Solicitor General George Hains in which the solicitor said that evidence against Woodward was not sufficient to warrant further detention.
Mrs. Kelly dies without altering her original statement that the affair was entirely accidental. She lapsed into unconsciousness early yesterday morning and was reported dying in mid afternoon.
She and (XXX) were riding near the underpass beneath the Georgia Railroad tracks at Harrisonville yards late Tuesday when the shooting took place, both told detective Willie Wilhelm.
Their stories differed only in that Mrs. Kelly contended her hands never touched the gun while her companion drove, she took his pistol from the dash board compartment and he tried to wrest it from her grasp.
Relatives of the dead woman were reported to have requested police not to place charges against (XXX) in the event she died without changing her version of the shooting.
Coroner R. Allen Elliott reported he would hold an Inquest some time today.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kelly will be held at the Central Christian church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with the Rev. J. Glover Morris officiating. Interment will follow in West View cemetery.
