James Kinder, a resident of Emporia, Kansas, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Stormont-Vail Medical Center, Topeka, Kansas. He was 79.

James Lee Kinder was born at Moline, Kansas, on November 15, 1932, the son of George Lee and Elizabeth Maude (Beechner) Kinder. He married Ann Kennedy at the First United Methodist Church, Emporia, on July 17, 1955. She survives.

Other surviving family members include: daughter, Debbie Kinder and her husband Bob Shank, Emporia; son, Larry Kinder and his wife Kathy Kinder, Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Jeffrey Glenn Kinder and Elizabeth Marie Kinder Mumm; three step-grandchildren, Brian, Scott, and Phil Shank; and four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William and Robert.

Jim graduated from Moline High School in 1950, then attended and graduated from the College of Emporia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956. He served in the United States Army from July, 1953 until June 1955. He worked for Reeble's Grocery Store in Emporia beginning in August of 1950, taking a break for his military service, then returning to Reeble's. He retired as Produce Department Manager in February of 1997.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he and his wife served as Lay Speakers from 1990 to 2000. He was a member and teacher in the '56 Followers Sunday School Class, served on the Administrative Board, Finance Committee, and was Co-Chair of Evangelism. He was a member of the Emporia Kiwanis Club since 1957, having a period of 20 years perfect attendance, and was due to receive his 55 year membership certificate.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Emporia, on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Jeannie Jensen of the church. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia, with military honors provided by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry –Funston Post #1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends at the church the hour prior to the service.

Memorials have been established for youth programs at First United Methodist Church or with the Salvation Army. Contributions may be sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
