Former Carthage Woman Succumbs
to Pneumonia at Webb City
Mrs. Lela Berry, wife of Allen [sic: Allan] Berry, died at their home, Third and Webb streets, Webb City, at 8 o'clock last night from pneumonia, followed by influenza. Mrs. Berry was formerly Miss Lela Benschoter and before her marriage resided south of Carthage.
Mrs. Berry was 23 years old. She was born October 24, 1896. The husband, two small children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Benschoter, living south of Carthage, two brothers and one sister, Ed and Melvin and Miss Virgie Benschoter, all residing at home, survive. She was a granddaughter of Mrs. M. A. Paul and a niece of Mrs. W. P. Grisham, of 921 Clinton street.
Mrs. Berry was married about three years ago. Previous to that time she taught school south of Carthage. She attended the Carthage High school before taking up teaching.
The funeral will be conducted from the home in Webb City at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

Lela Joy (Benschoter) Berry
Lela Joy was the second born daughter to Alva Vernoy and Hattie Dell (Paul) Benschoter. Lela's siblings were Rena Maye, Edward Alva, Virgie Muriel, and Melvin Paul.
Lela grew up in Jackson, Jasper County, Missouri before her marriage to Allan Jacob Berry (Sr.) on June 17, 1917 in Diamond, Newton county, Missouri.
Lela was so happy and thrilled to have found the man with whom she could make her life that she sent out postcards at Christmas time, the year of her marriage, to her family and friends with their wedding portrait.
Lela and Allan had two children. Auburn LaMoyne Berry was born February 3, 1918 in Diamond. She married Colbert Heinrich "Dutch" Otto, and they lived in Texas. She died June 5, 1992 in Corpus Christi.
Her brother, Allan Jacob Berry Jr. was born in Missouri on February 1, 1920, just five days before Lela Joy died from pneumonia incurred from influenza. Allan Jr. died in Glendora, Los Angeles county, California December 6, 1995.
Lela's husband and their two children moved to California with Allan's family (father William A Berry, mother Betty [Hille], and sister Janet) after Lela's death. Allan Jacob Berry Sr. died in Los Angeles, California on September 1, 1963.
